WOOD PLASTIC COMPOSITES “ON THE CUSP OF TAKE-OFF IN EUROPE”

New AMI study highlights trends in the European wood plastic composite market(data from:Applied Market Information Ltd)

AMI, Bristol, 14/10/03 —According to the latest research from AMI Consulting European production of wood plastic composites will reach almost 30,000 tonnes for the first time in 2003, having grown from less than 3,000 tonnes since 2000.

Unlike in the US, where the huge outdoor decking market has provided an ideal platform for WPCs to establish themselves, the substantial substitution opportunities in Europe are less obvious.

In its new study Wood Plastic Composites Ð Identifying Viable Opportunities in the West European market, AMI has quantified the young but fast growing market for wood plastic composites by application and by country, identifying viable opportunities for these new materials in decking, window profiles, doors, garden furniture, cladding, crates and pallets, roofline products, interiors and other applications.

According to AMI, WPC demand in the USA, which reached almost 400,000t in 2003, has been driven by several important factors, which are different in Europe.

The European WPC market has so far developed most strongly in Germany, with the supply structure numerically strongest in Germany and the UK. AMI Consulting has identified more than 25 European producers extruding wood plastic composites in 2003. The study compares the current size of the major European markets in per capita terms with the US per capita market excluding decking. The current supply structure in Europe is very young, with only 7 producers established before 2000. AMI details the impact that this is has had on the pace at which market penetration has been achieved and predicts future penetration to 2013.

LONG TERM SCENARIO FOR WOOD PLASTICS COMPOSITES, WESTERN EUROPE WITH
US COMPARISON

The current European WPC producers come from a variety of backgrounds, with 28% being completely new companies, 22% having their core business in PVC profiles, 22% being timber companies and 11% being recycling companies.

Some of the identified European suppliers are so far small scale and many barely beyond experimental stage in terms of WPC processing. The need for more companies with scale, influence and routes to market in order to raise the credibility of the industry and to enable significant substitution challenges to be addressed is, however, being met with larger players now entering the market.

AMI identifies some surprising applications in its study that it believes will be sustainable opportunities over the long term. Some larger end-use markets, such as window profiles and cladding, are also showing promising short term growth rates as more major processors announce their commitment to WPCs.

AMI´s economic model suggests the price in EUR/t that a WPC profile needs to be sold ex-factory to be profitable using current technology and formulations. This is compared to the equivalent selling price for profiles made from rival materials. The study also points out how WPC producers in Europe can market their products on technical advantages and on the maintenance and fabrication savings WPCs can offer.

According to AMI, the challenge for the WPC industry in the medium term is to place this young industry on a sounder and more co-ordinated footing. The study identifies the key issues to be addressed before this can happen and, taking account of the short to medium term barriers to progress identified in the study, forecasts growth, by country and by application, to 2006 and quantifies long term growth prospects to 2013.

The key issues for the WPC industry in Europe were explored in detail at AMI´s annual wood plastic composites conference and exhibition which was held in Vienna 23-25 September 2003. The conference, Wood Plastic Composites Viable Opportunities in Europe, reflected the level of interest in these new materials, attracting more than 300 delegates and speakers from 32 countries and selling out again this year.
